Building permits (CILA, SCIA)
CILA, SCIA and building permits: which authorisations you need to renovate and who handles the paperwork.
What does Building permits (CILA, SCIA) mean?
Building permits are the municipal authorisations required to carry out construction work. Most interior renovations only need a CILA (assessed start-of-works notice); larger interventions require a SCIA, while new builds or radical renovations need a full building permit (permesso di costruire).
The rules vary by type of work, property and municipality. A reliable company always checks the required paperwork before starting and manages the process — it is a prerequisite for compliance and for tax incentives.
